    A design for a pair of courtyard houses on a tight brownfield site in London. The houses are arranged around a series of external courtyards and terraces that are contained within the building envelope. Conceived as outdoor rooms, they have a strong spatial connection to the interior, introducing natural light into the heart of the plan.

    A two storey rear extension to a terraced house in Battersea. The aim was to create a greater sense of connection between the kitchen, dining room and the garden. A large glazed opening is framed in handmade bricks. A polished concrete bench runs through the opening, folding upwards to form the kitchen worktop.

    This project entailed the design for a treehouse set in the Herefordshire countryside. The treehouse was to be used as holiday accommodation and built into a copse of trees. The orientation of the treehouse spaces related to views of the countryside.

    A studio space for the musician and DJ Boy George. The studio is set within the garden of the client's house. The key component of the design is the provision of two studio spaces, each with a contrasting atmosphere and character.

    A single storey rear extension to a late Victorian house in South London. The new extension uses a number of features to enhance natural light to the interior including a courtyard, large roof windows and a projecting glass box window.

    This project involved the redevelopment of a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse incentral London. The existing building had fallen into a state of disrepair and its remaining historic fabric was under threat. Syte Architects worked with local planning and listed building officers to develop a proposal that preserved the Character of the listed building whilst providing several new one bedroom apartments. Part of a portfolio of nine similar properties.

    The refurbishment of an apartment within a converted insutrial building. The project provided additional bedrooms by enlarging the mezzanine floor. Sliding partitions and a structural glass stair maintained the open character of the existing space.

    A rear extension to a semi detached house. The extension provides a new kitchen space with generous ceiling heights. at the rear of the space a projecting window seat, lined in timber, connects to the garden.

    The refurbishment and conversion of a Victorian town house into a family maisonette and four HMO units. Syte Architects with local planning officers to negotiate a difficult set of planning restrictions to allow this scheme to be realised.

    The ground floor extension of a Victorian terraced house. Four large roof windows were positioned along the length of the extension to bring natural light into the new space.

  • Great Russell Street

    GREAT RUSSELL STREET BLOOMSBURY LONDON

    A mixed-use scheme for a Grade II listed building located opposite the British Museum. The property forms part of a terrace of shops and houses. The project involves the conversion of the upper floors from office use to residential, with the Ground and First floors being retained as commercial use. The development of the design for this project involved careful negotiations with Camden Planning and Conservation to develop an approach to converting the building.

  • PEABODY PLAISTOW LONDON

    Syte Architects were shortlisted in this competition to design an exemplar housing development of 150 homes on a four-acre site in Plaistow. Our proposal uses new buildings to define streets and squares which respect the scale and grain of the surrounding area and connect to the existing network of streets increasing pedestrian permeability across the site.

    The refurbishment of a terraced house in North London. The project focuses on exposing the existing materials and contrasting them with modern new elements such as a concrete worktop and suspended steel and timber stair.

    The site is located on a steeply sloping hillside looking south towards the Mediterranean. The existing farmhouse is to be extensively refurbished. A new build house is also proposed, this is designed to to follow the contours of the site and capitalize on the panoramic views.

    Listed building consent was achieved for this project to extend a third floor apartment into the roof space above, providing an additional bedrooms. The project also involved the refurbishment of the existing property.

  • Great Fen

    GREAT FEN VISITOR CENTRE NORFOLK

    CULTURAL

    A competition entry for a new visitor centre on the Great Fen nature reserve in Norfolk. The proposal suggested a central spine of rammed earth with a long viewing gallery to the north and, exhibition, teaching and restaurant spaces to the south. Openings in the spine wall allow views from either side across the fen landscape.

  • HERTFORD ROAD FINCHLEY LONDON

    The project consists of the development of a narrow brownfield site in East Finchley. Overlooked by both neighbours, securing planning consent for any kind of building immediately raised the issue of obscuring their rights of light. The solution was to partially submerge the house along the length of the site so that the roof was no higher than a traditional six-foot garden fence.

  • Canal Cottages

    The property is a large detached house which sits between the Regents Canal and Victoria Park. The client wanted to maintain the existing character of the exterior of the property whilst opening up the interior to spaces to accommodate their collection of artefacts.

    This project involved extending the existing building at ground and roof level. At ground level the extension was a minimally detailed brick volume, the roof extension was clad in zinc. A bespoke staircase was fabricated in metal to connect the new spaces.

    The complete refurbishment of a traditional London mews house. The circulation was reorganized to provide larger bedrooms and an additional ensuite bathroom. The ground floor was transformed into a single open plan space with a sliding glazed panel that allowed the kitchen to be discretely partitioned from the living space.

    This project involved creating a full basement level below the existing property. Light wells were introduced around the building’s footprint to bring natural light and ventilation to the new basement. The new stair was carefully designed to fit beneath the existing flight, saving space at both ground and basement level. The remainder of the house was also extensively refurbished.

    This scheme, 'The Wrapped Terrace', was an entry to the 2010 Daily Telegraph British Homes Awards Design competition. The scheme was short-listed by the Panel of Judges, chaired by Past President of RIBA, Sunand Prasad.

    Refurbishment of a Victorian house. Internally, the project focused on intricate joinery pieces combining lighting. Externally, a ground floor terrace overlooking the sunken garden was proposed.

The site was formerly occupied by a light industrial building and is located at the between the back gardens of adjacent residential properties on either side. The project involved the construction of four new townhouses and a single-storey dwelling.

    The construction of a new contemporary two-storey brick extension to an historic Edwardian house. The brief was to create a new extension with a strong sense of connection to the garden and an informal family living space. The existing house was also refurbished.

    The internal refurbishment of an apartment within a mansion block. The kitchen and living room were designed as flexible spaces which could be connected or seperated by a sliding screen of walnut and glass. Ceilings were conceived as suspended planes with a recessed lighting detail at their edges.

    The refurbishment and roof extension of a five storey Victorian end of terrace property within the Pimlico Conservation area. Two light weight timber, steel and glass stairs connect the basement and new roof terrace to the more traditional floors of the property.

    This project involved the refurbishment and extension of an apartment in Pimlico.The existing building was extended out onto an adjacent flat roof and a newterrace created.

    A competition entry for a large housing development on the banks of the River Tees. The proposal suggests a courtyard house typology that interlocks like a back-to-back terraced house. At the edge of the River Tees, the public spaces are conceived as a series of terraces set into the slope ultimately reaching towpath level.

    This project centred around creating a building which addressed the issues of 21st century housing, while relating to the contrasting scales of the immediate context and maintaining amenity for both the existing neighbours and future residents. The proposal is for nine flats with private carparking at Ground Level.

    A project for an internet kiosk at Westfield London. The project proposed a simple black oak desk, stainless steel fronted cupboards below concealed the IT equipment.

    This refurbishment of a top floor apartment sought to provide separation of spaces not through the use of partitions, but furniture elements. Large glazed screens and walnut cupboards form the individual spaces and allow rooms to be either open to each other or apart. The palette of material was deliberately kept to an absolute minimum.

    A new-build development of eight residential apartments on a tight urban site. There are two distinct elevations to the building, each with a distinctive character, acknowledging the site's corner position. A rainscreen of cement boards faces Oakley Crescent, with an extensively glazed elevation to City Road.

    A feasibility scheme for a mixed use building on a prominent corner site. Commercial units are proposed for the ground floor with residential accommodation above. The elevation is composed of brick with the top storey clad in zinc.

    This project for the extension of a family house proposed a two storey solution that could be achieved within the confines of permitted development rights. The new spaces are distinguished from the existing building by the use of glass and slatted timber cladding.

    A feasibility study for a developer client which proposed 50 new one, two and three bed flats on a brownfield site. The proposal suggested two deck access blocks which enclosed a central courtyard garden and car park. Several modular flat types were also developed in detail as part of the proposal.

      The conversion of an early nineteenth century postmill into a new dwelling. The proposal sought to retain the open plan circular form of the original mill, and this space contains the main living spaces. Bedrooms are located in a new timber clad building placed to the side of the mill. Its form differentiates it from the circular mill and the sloping roof focuses attention on the junction between the two forms.

      A project for a new 50 room hotel and restaurant for a developer client. The project proposes a new volume behind and above an existing historical facade. A green wall gives the new volume a distinct and simple appearance, separate from the intricate masonry of the existing facade.

      A competition entry for the developer Urban Splash. X flats were proposed in two blocks. These blocks were positioned perpendicular to the river running along the edge of the site providing all residents with oblique views. Central corridor access kept travel distances to a minimum and allowed each flat to have private loggia type balcony spaces.

      The existing building was a dilapidated hinge factory. The conversion of this property into a graphic design studio sought to retain the industrial architecture of the elevations and the riveted steel trusses within. The apex of the long roof was glazed to admit a large amount of natural light to the main space.
