We are currently working on a design for a pair of courtyard houses on a tight brownfield site in London. The houses are arranged around a series of external courtyards and terraces that are contained within the building envelope. These are conceived as outdoor rooms, with a strong spatial connection to the interior, introducing natural light into the heart of the plan and controlling views into and out of the building. Balconies are located within the façade, extending the idea of external rooms. The building’s external surfaces are formed of a light coloured brick, which gives texture to the walls of the courtyard.
